Descendants of Johann Heinrich ESCHBACH

Notes

William W. GARDNER

William had at least one threshing machine which he used throughout
the area of Newburg. The day of his death he was doing maintenance on
the machine with the help of a young man. While William was oiling
the rig, the young man threw the machine into gear. William, while
oiling the machine had stuck his head between the spokes of the
flywheel. He was decapitated

1586. Edith Pearl HASSINGER

Edith never married.

James Marvin KINGSBOROUGH

J.M. and Bertha did a lot of moving during their lifetime. Each move
included a public sale where the livestock was also sold. While
talking to Muriel, we came up with the following list of locations:
1. Lived west of Carlisle at an unknown location.
2. Shady Lane, east of Carlisle. Lester was born here.
3. The farm off of the Walnut Bottom road where Muriel was born.
4. Noble farm near the present site of Shoney's. Grandpa (William
Albert) lived across the road in the brick farmhouse (now Wilson and
Walnut Bottom road). Wm., J.M. and Frank had a milk route. It was
while servicing the route that Frank taught the preacher's parrot to
swear and the pastor had to get rid of the bird. Frank's family later
went west when his girls were about 16 years old.
5. Hamilton Street in Carlisle. Wm. Albert lived next door and still
had the milk route.
6. Bought the farm off Rt. 34 on Creek Road, north of Carlisle. J.M.
later sold this farm to Bertha's brother, John Bolen.
(9SEP1916-7APR1917 vol 8 bk Q pg 167)
7. Moved to a rented location on Bedford Street. He had to sell the
children's ponies. He went into the butcher shop business near the
Penn School.
8. Moved to F Street with Frank. The two brothers had a "falling
out". J.M. was working on the railroad on a work train. (Jake Spidel
lived where Darrs are, across from Schlusser's, and J.M. farmed his
farm). Then Spidels moved to town and Grandpa Spidel told ghost
stories.
9. J.M. sold everything and went west with 4 trunks. Moved in with
Frank in Minnesota. Lester and Muriel went to school at Lynd in a
horse drawn van. The farm was a state experimental farm. Chester
Martin, brother of Paul Martin and brother-in-law of J.M. lived about
15 miles away.
10. Next rented the Jewett farm in Ruthton, MN.
11. Next rented in Russell, MN. Lester and Muriel went to high
school here. Earl Martin, brother of Paul Martin, helped drive the
cattle to Russell. On this drive, Lester almost froze to death on his
horse, but Earl realized the problem and saved his life.
Russell was the location where the cyclone totally destroyed the
rented house. Lester and Muriel quit school. Kept the cows at
Chester's until a shelter was built. After a "straw barn" was built,
the cows were brought back. Bertha and Muriel had to carry the milk
to the separator which was some distance away. Lester and the hired
man slept in a big tent. Muriel's appendix ruptured here but was
never verified until about 1950 (a miracle?).
12. Moved to Ballaton, MN.
13. Back east to PA when Muriel was about 16-18. Rented farm behind
New Kingston.
14. Bought the "Little Place" on Beagle road which they later rented
to a man named Cloyd Teats.
15. Bought 160 acre farm on West Middlesex Dr. off Rt. 34 where they
lived until thier death.
a. Chester Martin went West first to Oldebolt, Iowa.
b. Earl Martin went West, Chester came back and married Mae
Kingsborough, sister of J.M.
c. Frank used his "good" car and drove as far as Chicago where the
roads went to almost nothing.
J.M. and Bertha were both members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church
of Carlisle.
