1742. Ernest Howard ASHBAUGH

CPL. Ernest H. Ashbaugh was drafted on March 27, 1942 at the age of 23. He was assigned to the U. S. Army's 112th Infantry Division. His unit was sent to Camp Livingston, Louisiana for swamp training. Because of an asthma condition, he never went overseas. He was reassigned to a motor pool where he drove heavy equipment building a motor pool for American Troops. From Florida, he was sent to Charleston, S. C. where he was driving tractor trailers hauling supplies to and from several bases . He spent Christmas 1944 in Missouri and wasn't given leave so he could go home for Christmas that year. Most of the men in his unit had Christmas leave because upon their return they would be going overseas. Ernest was in the army 33 months and returned home to Lebanon Junction, Kentucky February 4, 1945.

Ernest was a member of the Clermont Baptist Church in Kentucky.

He helped his father operate a 75 Acre farm where he raised corn, vegetables and livestock. He plowed, planted, cultivated and harvested crops. He drove horse teams and did general repair work.

He was an employee for the Jim Beam Brands Company in Clermont, Kentucky for 26 years. He was fired for drinking on the job. He was then an employee with Gamble Brothers in Louisville, Kentucky and then the State Highway Department.


1744. Edgar ASHBAUGH

Joined the U. S. Navy at the age of 16 in 1942. He was a radar operator serving in the South Pacific near Corregidor on the USS Suebrick. His ship was hit by a Japanese suicide plane and sunk. He and other crew members were in the water for some 12 hours before being rescued by another American ship. HE also served in the Korean War.

He was a retired employee of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Lebanon Junction.
