1949. James Absalom ASHBAUGH

Lived in Cincinnati, Oh. after marriage where he was employed by the Warner Elevator Company, builders of passenger and freight elevators, and then the Rahn-Lahrman Company, manufacturers of metal working lathes. In March of 1936, he was employed by the Minster Machine Company of Minster, Oh., a manufacturer of mechanical punch presses , in their Engineering Department. He became the Chief Engineer for the company in 1951, and served in that position until he retired in September of 1973. He received a patent for a Lubricant Pressure Control Valve in 1960, which detected whether there was adequate lubrication of the machine's bearings, when the operator was starting operation of the mechanical punch press. He was a member of the Minster Machine 25 Year Club. He also taught blueprint reading classes under the Government Education program, during World War II, and for other companies after the war.

An active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ since 1936, he was a member of the Men's Brotherhood, the Church Council, and the Sunday School Building and Building Fund Committee, and the Dedication Committee for the construction of the Sunday School Addition, for which he also prepared the building plans. He served as Deacon, Elder, and as President of the Brotherhood. He taught Sunday School for 44 years and was the Sunday School Superintendent from 1951-57. He served as President of the Church Council from 1945-51, and in 1958, as General Chairman for the 125 th Anniversary - Dedication Committee for the remodeled church sanctuary.

As a member of the St. Paul Men's Brotherhood, he was one of the individuals instrumental in the establishment of the first Boy Scout Troop 61 in New Bremen. He was active in the Boy Scouts for 15 years, was a member of the Shawnee Council of Region IV of the Boy Scouts of America, and in 1949 received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to boyhood in the Council.

He served on the board of the New Bremen School District from 1950-69 and served as its chairman for six years. During that period, the current elementary school, gymnasium and additions to the high school were built.

In 1963, he was one of six individuals who founded the New Bremen Garden Club, and became the first President of the club. He also edited their monthly bulletin "Garden Plauder". In addition to outdoor gardening, he grew African Violets and had an extensive indoor garden of violets in the basement of his home in New Bremen. He won many ribbons for the flowers he grew and displayed at flower shows. In 1975 he was certified as a judge by the Men's Garden Club of America and served as a judge at numerous flower shows in Northwestern Ohio.

He was a charter member of the New Bremen Senior Citizen's Club and served as President for three years. He served six years as trustee on the Auglaize Co. Council on Aging. In 1982 he was recognized by the Ohio Commission on Aging as an "Outstanding Senior Citizen" for outstanding contributions to the community after reaching age 60.

In July 1990 he and Mildred moved to Woodcrest Retirement Village in Decatur, In.


Mildred Gersine FRICKE

Prior to her marriage, she worked as a loom operator at the New Bremen Woolen Mills.

A life long and active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, she was a member of the Women's Guild and 'Busy Twelve' Sewing Circle. She spent many hours sewing, knitting, and quilting, making quilts, comforters and other things for the hospital and nursing homes. She taught Sunday School for 33 years, taught Vacation Bible School and regularly visited the ill and shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes.
